Sexual Assault Helpline -Volunteer Counsellors
Volunteers handle the 24 hour sexual assault line after hours and on weekends. In order to do this they have to take a forty hour training program which is offered twice a year, in spring and in fall.
Women must be at least 18 years of age to take the training. If you are interested please contact the volunteer co-ordinator and put your name on the list. Once you are contacted you will receive a one page job description and a three page questionnaire which you will need to fill out and return. You will then be called for a personal interview. You will also need to have a Police Record Check completed.
The training itself deals with "herstorical" analysis of violence against women, speakers from the medical, legal and police fields, suicide prevention and sexual abuse counselling. This is followed by exercises in listening and feeling skills and then practice with role-playing sessions. After the training is completed the you will again meet with the volunteer co-ordinator about your suitability for the volunteer counsellor position.
We ask for a minimum of one year commitment on the line. The vast majority of the work is telephone counselling but there is also crisis work which would involve direct assistance to a person who has just been sexually assaulted. Volunteers do work on teams so that a crisis call is handled by two people. Most volunteers work one shift every two weeks unless they have specific schedules that would need to be accommodated.
Volunteer Receptionist
We also need a volunteer to assist us with office reception and telephones on Wednesday's. This would involve answering telephones, taking messages, greeting clients and assisting the volunteer co-ordinator.
Board of Directors
We are seeking non-judgmental democratic women who are willing to objectively oversee the operations of the Centre. We need women who can work together towards a common goal. We are extremely interested in women who are part of an equity group. We also ask that a minimum one year commitment be made and that yu attend a monthly board meeting. Board members are elected at the Annual General Meeting in June of each year.
